Why You'll Love This Recipe
- You'll save so much time and money making your own pumpkin spice lattes at home instead of waiting in line and paying outrageous prices at Starbucks!
- It only requires 3 simple ingredients and 15 minutes of your time.
- This syrup uses real pumpkin puree for the most pure fall flavor!
- You can use DIY pumpkin pie spice if you aren't able to get your hands on any in the store.
Ingredients
- Pumpkin puree gives this syrup its delicious flavor! Only a small amount is needed so this is a great recipe to make when you have leftovers from other pumpkin baked goods.
- Pumpkin pie spice adds the warm fall flavors to this simple syrup. Find it premade by the rest of the spices in most grocery stores, or make your own by following the instructions in the recipe card notes below!
See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
Substitutions & Variations
- If you prefer yams over pumpkins, try replacing the pumpkin puree with sweet potato puree.
- Chai lovers can substitute chai spice for the pumpkin pie spice.
This recipe has not been tested with other substitutions or variations. If you replace or add any ingredients, please let us know how it turned out in the comments below!
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: In a small/medium saucepan or pot, mix together the water, brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice. Bring it to a boil over medium-low heat, and then let it simmer on low for 10 minutes while whisking occasionally.
Step 2: While the syrup is still hot, stir in the pumpkin puree until it's a nice hom*ogenous mixture. Let it cool and then transfer it to a container with a lid for storage. I like to re-use jars or bottles from jam and maple syrup!
How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte
Not only is it cheaper to make a homemade PSL with this recipe, it's way more delicious than Starbucks pumpkin spiced drinks! Plus, you can use your own cute mugs, like this little pumpkin mug!
I use my Breville Barista Express machine to make my own lattes, but you don't need fancy equipment to make your own! All you have to do is mix 1-2 tablespoons of the pumpkin spice syrup with a shot of espresso (or really strong coffee), and then pour in some steamed (or hot) milk! Add whipped cream and an extra sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice on top to make it even better. Note that the coffee/syrup/milk ratios can be adjusted to whatever your preference is!
Recipe FAQs
Is this gluten free?
Yes, this simple syrup is naturally gluten free.
Can I make this sugar free?
I haven't tested it with a sugar substitution, but I'd love to hear how it tastes if you try!
How can I make my own pumpkin pie spice?
Whisk together:
-3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
-2¼ teaspoons ground nutmeg
-2 teaspoons ground ginger
-1¾ teaspoons ground cloves
-1 teaspoon ground allspice
Can I use pumpkin pie filling instead of pumpkin puree?
Pie filling usually has extra sugars & spices mixed into it, so I wouldn't recommend substituting it. If you do, I'd cut back a little on some of the brown sugar & pumpkin spice.
Storage
Store this homemade pumpkin spice syrup in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 1 week.
